Tommy Burns was in Flintshire in the run-up to Christmas 1891 when he leaped from a landing stage. On Boxing Day, the Cheshire Observer reported:

Last week Tommy Burns, the celebrated diver, jumped into the Dee from the top of the landing-stage at Queen’s Ferry (Hawarden) Chemical Works, swam down to the ferry and landed, dressed at the Hawarden Castle Hotel, and ran to Buckley, all uphill, a distance of four miles, performing the double event in a very short time.
